Angel Sarez

AACA

When Angel Sarez Reina enters the Asian American Civic Association (AACA) to volunteer, “it feels like I am coming home to meet with friends,” he said. “Being an AACA volunteer gives me a sense of belonging and purpose.”

His first introduction at the AACA was to Executive Director Mary Chin. “Mary has been very good to me, providing me with resources, advice, support, clothing donations and has been like a grandmother to me,” Angel explained.

Up to three days a week, Angel volunteers at the AACA, helping with data entry, their annual gala, providing customer support and participating in their youth service program Voyagers Club that helps empower young adults ages 16-30 to achieve personal and professional goals.

He described the benefits of being a volunteer. “It sparks a joy inside of me,” Angel said. “It feels good to help people. And by participating in the workshops, I am learning as well.”

Angel’s story is as inspiring as his service. Originally from Guatemala, he came to the United States with his family and has worked hard to build a life while pursuing his degree in IT.

Angel explained that being recognized as an ABCD Community Hero makes him happy and that he encourages others to volunteer as well. “Being a volunteer has allowed me to grow in the sense that instead of being in my own bubble, I go into the world and reach out to others.”
