Yuk Yen Chin
Allston/Brighton

Yuk Yen Chin, born in China and later moving to Hong Kong before immigrating to Boston at nineteen, has lived in Brighton for more than forty years. After retiring, she sought meaningful ways to stay active and connect with others. Through the AmeriCorps RSVP program, he began volunteering at ABCD Allston-Brighton about a year ago.

Yuk Yen plays a vital role in the food pantry, organizing groceries, packing bags, and distributing food such as rice, canned goods, chicken, fish, and even diapers. She also supports Chinese-speaking community members by translating in Cantonese and Mandarin, helping them access services they might otherwise struggle to receive.

She finds great personal fulfillment in volunteering, saying it makes her feel useful and happy, especially seeing the gratitude of the people she helps. Acknowledging the large need for food assistance in Brighton, Yuk Yen sees her work as both necessary and rewarding.

In recognition of his service, Yuk Yen was honored as the Community Hero for ABCD Allston-Brighton—a recognition she describes as an honor for which she feels deeply grateful.
