Luz Leal

East Boston

A lifelong Jamaica Plain resident, Luz works for the City of Boston’s Age Strong Commission and was nominated for this award for her work with older adults at the East Boston Senior Center and her partnership with the ABCD East Boston EPAC. She is passionate about building with both members of the community and other nonprofit organizations and is always looking for ways to make people of all backgrounds and cultures feel welcome.

Luz frequently encounters elders living alone and individuals who speak little to no English. In these instances, she always prioritizes addressing the most urgent needs first, including free groceries and SNAP benefits.  "A hero is someone who does something as little as a smile or a positive change to benefit others without wanting anything in return," she says, adding that she is humbled and honored by the recognition.

Outside of work, Luz enjoys spending time with her family and dog, playing softball, traveling, and reading. She also volunteers with the Medical Reserve Corps Boston and the Boston Public Health Commission.
