Boston Police Officer Elvis Garcia, Sr. is a youth service officer who works with community centers to form athletic programs such as Police Athletic League Basketball and Flag football. “These leagues are more than just sports teams – they are safe spaces where youth can come after school, or on the weekends, and feel respected, secure, and free to express themselves without fear of judgment or harm,” he explained.

Elvis became involved with ABCD when Kathy Vo invited him to speak to the YEA! (Youth Engaged in Action) program. He considers himself more of a partner rather than a volunteer – working in collaboration with ABCD in service to the community. “I encourage people to get involved and volunteer, because with each opportunity to help, encourage and inspire someone, you are creating a ripple effect of change,” he said.  “As such, being named an ABCD Community Hero makes me feel incredibly humbled and blessed.”

He lives in Hyde Park and spends his free time with family and fishing. Elvis said he recently watched Spiderman: Brand New Day. “In the movie there's a quote that fits this whole theme of volunteering, ‘when you help someone, you help everyone’".
