James Michael Ahern
South Boston
A certified girl dad, James Ahern said, “raising my daughters in the same community where I grew up has given me an even greater appreciation for the importance of nurturing our youth. I want my daughters and other young women in South Boston to believe in themselves and understand that they belong on the field, on the court, and in every space they choose to pursue.”
He coaches flag football for Kickoff for Kids and basketball teams for Gate of Heaven Catholic Youth Organization, Boston Centers for Youth and Families Tynan, among other volunteer endeavors. James believes that volunteer coaching moments resonate are often the ones that go beyond the scoreboard. “When one of my players finally caught her first touchdown. It was an incredibly special moment to witness — because of her own happiness, and the celebration from her teammates, which demonstrated what makes youth sports so meaningful.”
James said he is honored to be named an ABCD Community Hero, and encourages others to volunteer. “You don’t have to make a huge commitment or do something extraordinary. Every contribution matters.”
He spends free time with his wife and two daughters, and he listens to anything New Edition, especially their Heart Break album.
