Joan Williams

Elder Services

Joan was a dedicated member of the Foster Grandparent Program for  20 years. A woman of faith, Joan believed in the golden rule: treating others with the same kindness she wishes to receive. Joan enjoyed a wonderful and sheltered childhood, remaining very close to her parents and siblings. Originally visiting Boston on vacation, she decided to take a leave of absence from her job after her family encouraged her to stay. Ultimately, she settled in Boston with her husband and raised two children. She also has six grandchildren with whom she was very close.

Seeking out new opportunities after retiring, she learned about the Foster Grandparents program after seeing a flyer for it in her church.. Although she initially intended to volunteer for only an hour or two, her passion for the work led her to stay for over two decades. Joan truly loved working with children, and she found deep fulfillment in the bond they shared.

Living by the motto "Be kind to others," Joan created a comfortable and loving environment where her students feel safe and supported and found that the love she gave to the children was always returned. Michael Fitzpatrick, a teacher at Saint Theresa of the Child Jesus School in Somerville and Joan’s longtime colleague, held her in the highest regard: “She was a caring, loving person who displayed professionalism to the highest standard each and every day.”
