Naomi Wang

AACA

Naomi volunteers with the Asian American Civic Association (AACA) where they design and update flyers and donor briefs, help with job search drop-ins, and assist students with resumes and job applications. They are also developing a coding curriculum for AACA's Voyagers youth program and helping to recruit assistant teachers, as well as teaching a beginner’s ESL class. In addition, they have written a few articles for the Sampan Newspaper, New England’s only bilingual paper serving the Chinese-speaking community.

Naomi first learned of AACA through its immigration services work but soon discovered that the organization’s scope went far beyond that, from education and job training to youth mental health. They treasure connecting with Chinatown and AACA's students. One BEEMS student, a longtime tennis coach, has offered them free lessons ever since they met. “It is small moments like these where I feel most connected to the community,” they said.

Outside of AACA, Naomi volunteers with the Boston Immigration Justice Accompaniment Network (BIJAN) where they support immigrant families at court hearings and ICE check-ins and shares legal and mutual aid resources in multiple languages. Naomi is also starting an internship with the MA Court Service Center, where they conduct intake and legal referrals Longterm, they hope to become a lawyer providing legal help to underserved communities.
